  • Guestbook
Melody Anne Smith, 77, of Lubbock passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 1, 2020. Melody was born March 1, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas to the late Roy and Irene (Estes) Christensen. Melody married Billy Neal Smith on May 10, 1960 at the young age of 17. She was a devoted wife and one of her greatest joys was becoming a mother to Jeffrey, Kriston and Jonathan. She always longed for a baby girl to complete the family and was thrilled to adopt Tebogo (Tebby) Melody Smith from Botswana, Africa. Melody dedicated her life to her God and her family. She selflessly followed and supported her husband as he preached and ministered in Montana, Kansas, Africa, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Slovakia and Texas. While Bill was busy in the pulpit, she was ministering in her own way, teaching basic life skills and showing hospitality. She truly was a mother to all who knew her! Her humble and gentle spirit was evident in every area of her life…except her hugs! She hugged and loved fiercely! She enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking, and most of all spend time with her family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bill Smith; children, Jeff Smith and wife Stacy, Kris Smith and wife Barbara, all of Lubbock, Jonathan Smith and wife Andrea of Sherman, and Tebogo Melody Smith of Lubbock; grandchildren, Kristin Bundy, Daniel Smith, Logan Smith, Amy Jo Kinnaird, Jordan Smith, and Jeriko Smith; and great grandchildren, Jaxon, Brooklyn, and Tatum Bundy, Monroe, Pierce, and Ansel Smith, Townlie, Shiloh, Sutton, and Ellie Smith, and Theo Kinnaird.

A come and go visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Venue on Broadway with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 9, 2020 at Venue on Broadway, masks will be required to enter. Please visit this web page to access the live video stream at the time of the service. A recording of the service will be available for 90 days after the service on our website.

Memorial donations can be made to DiscipleTrips (a mission organization founded by her son, Jeff), care of Sunset International Bible Institute (SIBI) at 3723 34th St. Lubbock, Texas 79410 or at

Our mother and sister in the Lord was a loving kind daughter of the Most High whose foot prints are indelible in our hearts in Botswana. We loved sister Melody her kindness, hospitality and zeal to serve God. May her soul rest in perfect peace. Love, Bakanuki.

Much love and prayers for comfort to Bill, the boys and their families. Melody was a kind and thoughtful friend who was an example of grace as we lived and worked together in Botswana. She showed me what a servant heart looks like in action, and her cheerful patience something I try to practice. Love to you all...Kim Brocks

Bill, Jeff, Jon, Kris, Tebbie, and your families, Dave and I share in your sadness and celebration of Melody’s beautiful life. I will never forget my earliest memory of her when I got to go with her to see her Grandparents Christensen in Parsons, Kansas. We got to gather eggs from the hen house, try to milk a cow, and drink the fresh milk. I loved her deeply from then on. She let God use her to make a powerful and lasting difference on this earth...through you and others. She will be missed, but I can hear God saying, “Well done my faithful servant. Enter into the gates of heaven.” I plan on being with her one day. You are in our prayers and deep in our hearts and may our loving Father hold you close and comfort you in your loss.
