William “Bill” Joseph Doherty of Lubbock passed away peacefully on October 27, 2020 at the age of 72 years old. Bill was born on September 25, 1948 in Trinidad, Colorado to William Owen and Georgia (Hudson) Doherty. He graduated from Branson (Colorado) High School where he was an active member of the 4-H club. After graduation he attended Texas Tech University where he was a member of the livestock judging team. During his time at Texas Tech he met and married Janice Rooney. Upon graduation they moved back to the family ranch in Folsom, New Mexico and remained there for 20 years. They then had ranches in both New Mexico and Oklahoma. Bill and Janice “retired” to Lubbock in 2010 where Bill worked for ARMtech as a crop adjuster. Bill enjoyed attending Texas Tech games and any and all basketball games of his grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janice Doherty; son, Joe Doherty and wife Sally; 2 sisters, Mary Margaret Wright and husband Gary, and Georgia Lockridge; and 3 grandchildren, Sarah, Will and Meredith Doherty.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Judy Alexander and John Doherty.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Bill’s name to benefit the livestock judging program at Texas Tech University and sent to: Texas Tech Foundation, PO Box 45025, Lubbock, Texas 79409.

We are sorry to hear about Billy Joe and condolences to his family. I knew him back in high school and we attended Lamar College and were on the judging team together and enjoyed that time. R.I.P.

Bill was a great man! I enjoyed him the minute I met him...His devotion to his family was outstanding and was good man to visit with...He will be missed!
