Reta Mac Hardin of Lubbock passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at the age of 92. She was born to Emmitt and Odessa (Carmack) Phifer on September 6, 1928 at the Texas Experiment Station at Spur, Texas where her father was working. Her mother knew a little boy named Mac and thought he was so cute, so that I where her middle name came from. As she grew up, the family worked in Mr. Gollihar’s cotton field, making a total of $7/day. It was typical for Reta to get 35 cents per hour, having to use part of that money to buy school clothes. They took their lunch to the field each day and ate in the shade of the car.
Reta’s mother was a talented seamstress and taught her at the young age of 8 how to sew. By the time she was out of high school, she was making her own clothes. Reta graduated from McAdoo High School in 1945 as Valedictorian receiving several scholarships; however, it was not enough to cover all expenses and her father didn’t think it was necessary for a girl to go to college. It was much later in life that she did graduate from Lippert Business College.
On February 10, 1946, she married B. C. Hardin, Jr. in McAdoo, Texas. After returning from their honeymoon, they stayed with Reta’s family while working on their new four-bedroom home on the Hodges land, next to the Hardin farm. The house did not have a bathroom or running water. They would haul water in barrels until their well was dug.
As with all farmers, the setbacks were dry hot weather, high winds and hail. They borrowed money from the Farmers Home Administration to operate and some years were able to pay the loan, other years interest only. Our food source came from home-grown chickens and eggs, and a plentiful garden. Reta never lost faith that God was good to them, and they never went hungry.
She is survived by two sons, Lyndon Hardin and wife, Judy, and Randall Hardin and wife, Harmony; one daughter, Reta Cooper and husband, Rick; grandchildren, Bryan Hardin and wife, Amanda, Sharla Osburn and husband, Derek, Kasey Hearn and husband, Matt, Penny Pierce, John Pierce, Riki Underwood and husband, Rob, Kary Cooper and wife, Rebecca; great-grandchildren, Aspyn, Makaidyn, and Pacyn Osburn, Jaelyn Hardin, Lindsey Leggett and husband Trevor, Jace Hearn, Kayla Pharr and husband, Michael, Katlyn Collins, Jackson and Alyssa Underwood; great-great grandchildren, Jessica, Owen and Ryker Pharr; and brother, Lavelle Phifer.
Reta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, B.C. Hardin, Jr. in 2018 after 72 years of marriage; and sister, Neva Bass.
Open visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2021 with the family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Combest Family Funeral Homes. Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2021 at the McAdoo Cemetery in McAdoo, Texas.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Lubbock, 3702 21st St, Lubbock, 79410 or the McAdoo Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 56, McAdoo, 79243. The family would like to thank Wilshire Place for the love and care given to their mother.
