Fern Ellen Childress (Ma Fern), 83 of Tahoka passed away Monday, September 9, 2019. She was born May 25, 1936 to Cleave and Jewel (Minor) Bairrington in Tahoka, Texas. Fern graduated from O Donnell High School. She married the love of her life, Elton Childress on August 15, 1952 in Tatum, New Mexico. A lifelong resident of Lynn County, she was a farm wife for many years before going to work for Lynn County as a jailer in 1988. She worked in the jail as a jailer and finally as a jail administrator from 1998 until her retirement in 2013. Fern was a member of the First Baptist Church in O Donnell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleave and Jewel Bairrington; her husband, Elton Childress; one son, Scotty Childress and five brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Connie (Bobby) Jordan of Slaton and Toye (Kris) Harmon of Tahoka; two sons, Rex (Patricia) Childress of Winnsboro and Joe (Jill) Childress of Lubbock; one brother, Ronnie Bairrington of Weatherford; one sister, Susie Bairrington of Dallas; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 10 am until 12 noon at First Baptist Church of Tahoka. Celebration of Life services will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 2 PM at First Baptist Church of Tahoka with interment to follow at Tahoka Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, First Baptist Church of Tahoka or a charity of your choice.

I was blessed to have known ma fern. Not only did I know her she took me into her family as one their own. I had the pleasure of knowing Elton also and know she is now with him and the lord.
