Elena I. Romo, 91, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2020. She was born August 18, 1928 in Nava, Mexico to Abraham and Trinidad (Montelongo) Ibarra. Elena married Jose Jesus Romo on October 29, 1945. She was a caretaker for Clergy at St. Joseph’s Church for 20 years.

She was our loving mother and grandmother. She was married to our dad, Jose Jesus Romo for 51 years. Elena was the Matriarch of our family who served our Lord with love & devotion. She was a member and faithful servant at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church since 1950. She touched many lives through her service to her church community as a Guadalupana, Cursillista and Alter Society Member. Everyone she encountered she fed them physically and spiritually. She embraced everyone. She was everyone’s friend. She was gracious to all.

She truly lived out her baptismal. She lived by example to pray, have faith, forgive, love abundantly, and to always give thanks. We will miss her smile as we walked in the room and her blessing as we left her home; her silly jokes, singing and how she gathered the entire family in prayer.

Despite what the world is going through right now, we know that our mom never walked in fear. At the young age of 17, she left her family in Mexico as a newlywed, to start a new life in Galveston, TX. Her faith led her into the unknown, but she never walked in fear. She and our dad raised 11 children and we just want to celebrate her despite the chaos. We know her prayers will always protecting us.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Rudy and wife Maria Romo of San Antonio, Jose Guadalupe and wife Alice Romo of Lubbock, Juanita Romo of Lubbock, Maria Elena and husband Santos Rodriguez, of San Antonio, Fermin and wife Patricia Romo of Lubbock, Dora and husband Joe Longoria, Norma and husband Mario Ybarra, Daniel and wife Adrienne Romo, Gina Romo of San Antonio, George and wife Nora Romo of Lubbock, and Christina and husband Jimmy Tafoya of San Antonio; siblings, Valentina Ibarra, Juan Ibarra, Jose Angel Ibarra, and Belia Ibarra; 33 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jose Jesus Romo; siblings, Guadalupe Ibarra, Beatriz Ibarra, and Santos Ibarra.

Thank you grandma romo for your love and acceptance you have gifted me when I became one in this loving family. I love you as my own grandma, you gave me my husband and children beautiful memories I will forever cherish! I always look foward to visit you when we go to lubbock. I miss the phone conversations, and all the awesome stories you would tell me when we spent time together. like we always ended our conversations with your blessing and you always said que dios te bendiga and say hi to Fermin Romo Jr. and the babies I would say bueno grandma al rato voy y la visito. I still look foward to those visits, I will continue to send you flowers and spend time with you even if you dont tell me stories any more it will still be comforting. I am truly heartbroken💔. We will continue your legacy especially baby Elena romo.
