Helen Juanita Brooks of Lubbock Texas passed away Saturday, March 14th peacefully in her sleep. She was born on April 30th 1924 to Amanda Marie Huff and Michael Josie Ruff in Lingle Wyoming. She had one brother named Michael Mikes Ruff.

Helen grew up and went to school in Lingle where she was a Majorette Baton twirler in the band. In 1941 she met Robert (Bob) Brooks during the Depression while he was working The WWII CC Camps in Wyoming. They ran off to Scottsbluff Nebraska to get married in 1942. After marrying they moved to Amarillo to live before Bob was shipped out with The United States Airforce. Helen moved back to Lingle, Wyoming to live with family while he was gone. When Bob returned from the service he worked in the mines and Helen was a homemaker. They had three children, Bobette Rebecca Brooks born in 1943, Lonnie Eugene Brooks born in 1946 and Greggory (Greg) Michael Brooks born in 1955.

They moved to Lubbock, TX in 1949 which Helen never left. Robert attended Texas Tech School of Dairy Manufacturing and Helen worked at Lavine’s Hosiery and Hat Dept. She later worked for a cookie making factory. Bob graduated in 1952 and went to work for Borden Dairy Manufacturing and she went back to a housewife. She was the perfect 1950’s American Housewife. She prepared and cooked 3 meals a day including dessert at dinner. She was a talented seamstress and could sew anything.

Bob passed away suddenly in 1972 which was a shock to the whole family especially Helen. They had a very special love for one another like no other. In 1973 she acquired a set of Duplexes in Midland Tx at which time she became self-employed until her death. She was an active member at Trinity Church of Lubbock, TX before her health changed. Once she became a grandmother her grandkids became her hobby along with vacationing with family. She helped raise some of the grandkids at times and visited and traveled with them often.

Helen’s grandkids and their families are Joel Dow (Trey) Starnes III married to Christy Starnes, son Mitchell Starnes and Thomas and Meredith Neeb of Lubbock, Stephanie Starnes Corwin married to Steve Corwin, children Katelyn and Braden Corwin of McKinney Tx. Chrystal Michelle Brooks, son Ian Martin and Zaedyn Mojica of Lubbock TX. Amanda Brooks Hofmann married Paul Hofmann, of Palestine TX Robert (Reb) Brooks, children Faith and Hailey Brooks, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Robert Lee Michael Rennels, son Tommy Rennels of Lubbock Tx.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents Amanda and Michael Ruff, her brother Michael Mikes Ruff, and son Lonnie Eugene Brooks.

There will be a Memorial service Friday March 20th, 2020 at 3:00 PM at Combest Family Funeral Homes.

The family would like to express their gratitude towards Hospice, Hospice Staff and her son Greg for being her 24 hour caretaker these last few years.
