Mark Stephen “Steve” Abernathy, 61, of Lubbock, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021 at University Medical Center.

Mr. Abernathy was born in San Angelo, Texas on November 26, 1959 to Mark Abernathy and the late Jan (Niles) Neilson. He graduated from high school in 1977.

Mr. Abernathy was a proud and honorably discharged veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving two tours of active duty, from 1977 to 1981 and 1984 to 1987.

He met the love of his life, Tammy Butler, and they married on June 19, 1991 in Odessa, Texas.

Mr. Abernathy opened CTAR in Lubbock and operated that business for a number of years before becoming associated with Ingraham Concrete in August of 2008. At the time of his death, he was the Plant Manager of Ingraham Concrete and was well respected by all of his colleagues.

He thoroughly enjoyed playing computer poker as a hobby. He was very family centered and oriented and loved being around his family. Although he did not have a church home, he was brought up in the Baptist faith.

Steve, as he was well known, is survived by his loving wife, Tammy; one son, Steven Ryan Butler of Lubbock; three daughters, Christina Modisett of Lubbock, Tabatha Hays of Lubbock and Brandy Couch of Lubbock; his father and step-mother, Mark and Mary Abernathy of Virginia; two brothers, Gene Abernathy of Winnsboro, Texas and Chris Abernathy of New Braunfels, Texas; one sister, Cherie Anderson of Odessa, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jan Neilson.

At the request of the Abernathy Family, there will be no public visitation prior to the funeral service.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P. M. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 in the Combest Family Memorial Chapel with Reverend Bill Fuller officiating. Burial will be in the Anton Cemetery in Anton, Texas under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
