Alpha Marie Ledgerwood

of Lubbock, TX

January 23, 1939 - July 7, 2021

  • Obituary
  • Guestbook
Alpha Marie Ledgerwood passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 7, 2021. She was born January 23, 1939, in Oklahoma to Loyal and Cecil Smith. Alpha met her future husband, Ron, at church in Norman, Oklahoma during her freshman year at the University of Oklahoma. They were married in November of 1959 in Elk City, Oklahoma at her parents’ home.

Ron and Alpha moved to Houston, Texas in 1962 after both growing up in small towns where she adapted well to the big city life. They attended Southeast Church of Christ, where they met many lifelong friends, for 20 years before moving to Lubbock in 1982. They have lived in the same house for 40 years surrounded by wonderful neighbors that are like family.

Ron and Alpha traveled extensively during her lifetime and enjoyed meeting new people and seeing different places. In 1989 they purchased a small cabin in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. They loved going there and went as often as they could where many friends and family visited. They attended Cloudcroft and Mayhill Church of Christ over the years and met many more lifelong friends. She loved nature and especially animals of all kinds that she would spoil no matter the type. She fed the birds, deer, and whatever animal showed up.

Alpha was a homemaker, but not just any homemaker. She kept her house and cabin in immaculate condition and enjoyed cooking for guests and family members. Anyone who visited was treated to her wonderful cooking and baking. Her fudge was legendary.
In 1999 a tumor was found attached to her head. After 16 hours of surgery, she not only survived but enjoyed another 21 plus years despite nerve damage that affected her swallowing and speech, also losing her hearing in one ear. She never ever complained about anything and didn’t want to be a bother to anyone. Due to the problem of swallowing she gradually lost weight over the years, which eventually contributed to her death.

Ron and Alpha also thoroughly enjoyed attending all of their grandkids, Taylor and Michaela, events over the years. Rain or shine, they would show up supporting them.

Alpha was a very sweet, but tough lady who had a kind soul. She was soft spoken, had beautiful eyes, and a big contagious smile. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbor, and a fine Christian lady. She will be missed by many but welcomed by many more at the gates of Heaven.

Alpha was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Mitzi, her brother L.C. Smith and sister-in-law Eva Lee Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Ron; her son, Kip; grandkids, Taylor (Chelsey) and Michaela (Fiancé Josh Peek); great-grandkids, Alivia, Hudson, and Beckett Brown; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved pets, Shimmy, Bernie and Caeser.

The family also wants to thank her neighbors, members at Sunset, and Veronica with Caring Hearts for their kindness and love they had for Alpha.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any animal shelter, Lubbock Christian Schools, or the AIM program and Sunset School of Preaching. She loved greeting new students at Sunset and made many newcomers feel welcome.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 12, 2021, at Sunset Church of Christ. Everyone is welcome to celebrate the life of Alpha Marie Smith Ledgerwood.
