Odessa Paynes was born to the union of Jurline and Jim Payne on September 24, 1943, in Ellis County, Texas. She passed away peacefully at Midland Memorial Hospital on July 19, 2021, after a lengthy illness.

Odessa was the ninth of ten children. She was reared in Ellis County before moving to Tahoka, Texas, where she attended public schools. She met and married Eugene Paynes on December 5, 1963. To this union, two children were born, Kimberly Nanette and Yuvette Shanta’. Odessa helped to nurture and raise her nieces and nephews – Barbara, Helen, Sandra, Lynia, Uylonda, Jimmy, Joseph, Clifford, Earnest and great-nephew Chris.

She was a homemaker for many years before obtaining employment at Lynn County Hospital as a nurse’s aide. She was well known for her cooking skills and was instrumental in catering for private parties. She later opened Mama’s Kitchen and served many meals to the Tahoka community.

She was a devoted Christian and loved the Lord. She was a faithful member of Loving Chapel COGIC for many years under the leadership of Elder James Scott in which she served as Church Secretary for many years. After the passing of Elder Scott, Supt. Johnnie Evans was her pastor for several years. She later moved to Midland, Texas, to be closer to her family. She joined Alexander Temple COGIC under the leadership of Supt. Edgar Lee Blackmon. Later, Pastor Tommy T. Hudson became her Pastor. She was a very faithful member until her health began to decline.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Eugene Paynes, her parents Jurline and Jim Payne, her brothers Elmo Payne, Joseph Payne, Ciscero King and Johnny Payne; her sisters, Lila Mae Payne, Myrtle White, Martha Moore and Annie Mae Washington.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Kimberly Walker of Houston, TX, Yuvette Rabb (Danny) of Haslet, TX; grandchildren N’Kia Wynne of San Antonio, TX; Cameron Hurd of Haslet, TX; great-grandchildren, Kamari Shanta’, Kason Szavion and Khree De’Shae of San Antonio, TX; and one sister, Amy Williams of Dallas, TX. She also leave a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2021, at Combest Family Funeral Homes in Tahoka. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 24, 2021 at First United Methodist Church in Tahoka with burial to follow at Nevels Memorial Cemetery.
