Obituary

Calvin Lester Wynne passed away June 7th, 2026. He was born April 27th, 1949 in Midland, Texas. His parents were Juanita Pearl (Howell), Calvin Edd Wynne and Henry Wynne (stepfather). He had three loving sisters: Anna Lou Reams (Charles), Jetta Jackson (Andy), and Ida Bramhall. After an early life of moving around and childhood shenanigans, Calvin followed in the footsteps of family before him and joined the U.S. Army in January of 1968. He proudly served in a K-9 Military Police unit in Germany and Vietnam. After a brief time away from active duty in the 1970s, he returned to service as a member of the Texas Army National Guard in 1980 and resumed full-time active duty in 1984. After serving and making life-long guard friends in Lubbock, Amarillo, and Plainview, he retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1999. In his “retirement” he worked for an internet service provider, served as a hospital security guard, tinkered with computers, made messes in the garage, served as a dedicated band parent, enjoyed being a dog dad, and reveled in being a doting grandfather.

Ranking even higher than his pride in his military service was his family. He married the love of his life Laura (Hull) on June 15th, 1979. Together they raised three wildly unique and accomplished children: Amanda Renea Dauntes, Julee Dawn Cunningham (married to Trent), and Calvin Heath Wynne. For them he served as a prime role model, showing them the merit of hard work, the benefit of expressing your creativity, and the power of saying “I love you.” He also demonstrated the value of retaining every power cord he ever used.

As his family grew, with additions and grandchildren, so did his love. It is unanimous: he was the best Poppy ever. From baby-sitting and watching Phineas and Ferb all summer, to sharing his love of technology and video games, to giving rides on his mobility scooter, to explaining his military service and ribbons, to showing them around his Animal Crossing Island (where he spent roughly 6,380 hours), to making polymer clay projects together, he ALWAYS had time for the babies he loved so much. He will be missed but forever treasured by his loving grandchildren: Matt Chapman (Kelbie), Harleigh Wynne, Calee Cunningham, Hudson Wynne, Marshall Cunningham, Ellis Cunningham, and Harper Cunningham.

His playful nature, pledges of affection, love for sci-fi and British mystery television, tenacity to problem solve, pride in serving his country, quick wit, determination, and resiliency will be missed by all those who survive him; however, and more importantly, those qualities will remain within them as a testament to his legacy and love.
