Obituary

With heavy hearts and gratitude for a life lived, we announce the passing of a husband, father, grandfather, and proud veteran. Esteven C. Gonzalez, born January 28, 1947 departed peacefully on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the age of 79, having completed his marching orders. A proud veteran, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Armed with a smile and a genuine greeting for everyone he met, he viewed every face as simply a friend whose story he had not yet heard.

Esteven loved lacing up his shoes and walking mile after mile. Those walks became a routine shared with a close circle of his military brothers. Together, he and his fellow veterans encouraged one another and kept moving forward. One of his favorite traditions was gathering after their appointments at the VA clinic for a cup of coffee, laughter, and conversations that strengthened their bonds.

An avid reader, he traveled through the pages of hundreds of books, and when he wasn't reading a book or the Good Book, he found enjoyment in watching classic Westerns. He also enjoyed the rhythm of music and the joy of the dance floor. Above all, his greatest joy was his family. He loved his wife Linda, and together they danced through life's trials and triumphs. Esteven was proud of his three children.

As a grandfather, he was a steady source of wisdom, encouragement, and love. He freely shared the lessons he had learned throughout his life, hoping to help his grandchildren avoid mistakes he had made and walk a wiser path. While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that he now serves in a different place. On earth, Esteven—like the rest of us—was a work in progress. In the presence of the Lord, that work is finally complete. We find peace in knowing that his journey of faith has led him to a glorious destination.

He leaves behind Linda, his devoted and loving wife of almost 60 years; son, Estevean Jr.; two daughters, Cynthia Lira and Debbie Cruz; five granddaughters, Marina Lira, Mia Lira, Gloria Lira, Isabella Cruz, and Abigail Cruz; two grandsons, Xander Gonzalez and Zane Gonzalez and his first great-grand baby on the way.

Esteven was preceded in death by his parents, Catarino and Maria Gonzalez.

Visitation will be from 11:00 am - 8:00 pm, Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel. Graveside services with military honors will be at 10:00 am, Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
