Lewis Wayne “Buddy” Hogan, age 87, of Arlington, Texas, passed away on October 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and hard work.
Born on April 8, 1939, in Lubbock, Texas, to Lewis David Hogan and Marie Stewart Hogan, The second oldest of five siblings, Wayne learned the value of hard work at an early age. At just 12 years old, he began his first job washing dishes at a local diner. That determination and work ethic would become defining characteristics of his life.
Wayne began working at Time Motor Freight Company while still in high school and continued throughout his college years, starting in the mailroom. In 1961, he graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in finance. Having already distinguished himself through his strong work ethic and dedication, Wayne was immediately hired by Time Motor Freight Company as an accountant.
One of his favorite stories perfectly captured his commitment to hard work. After spending an entire night working at the office, Wayne hurried home for a quick shower before returning to begin the next workday. When he arrived just ten minutes late, his boss reprimanded him, not realizing Wayne had worked through the night and had left the office only an hour earlier. It was a story Wayne loved to tell, and one that reflected the values he carried throughout his life: work hard, do the job well, and always see things through.
In 1972, Wayne moved to the Dallas area to become Chief Financial Officer of Red Ball Motor Freight Company. He and his family settled in Arlington, Texas, where he would make his home and raise his family for the remainder of his life. Yet no matter how many years passed, Lubbock always held a special place in his heart. It was the hometown he never forgot and a place he would always consider home.
Wayne also proudly served in the National Guard from January 1962 to 1968, demonstrating the same sense of responsibility, dedication, and commitment that characterized his personal and professional life.
Even a diagnosis of colon cancer in 2011 did not diminish his work ethic. Wayne continued working throughout his cancer treatment and recovery, and he did not fully retire until he was 83 years old.
In 1961, Wayne married Dorothea Mae Hogan, beginning a marriage that would span 65 years. Together, they built a life centered on family and enduring commitment. Through the changing seasons of life, their marriage remained a beautiful testimony of loyalty and love.
Wayne and Dorothea were blessed with two children, Lewis Wayne Hogan Jr. and Cheryl Denise Coghlan, who passed away in 2022. Their family grew to include four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Known as Wayne to his friends and Buddy to his family, he was a man who valued relationships and made an intentional effort to stay connected with the people he loved. His phone was one of his favorite ways of keeping family close. He regularly called and texted his siblings, children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Some received calls weekly, others daily, and a few might hear from him several times in a single day. Those familiar phone calls were one of the ways Buddy expressed his care. He wanted to know how everyone was doing, wanted them to be careful and stay “safe”, wanted to discuss the latest Texas Tech game, and wanted to share some good jokes or memes.
Buddy's faith was personal and quiet, but it was real and enduring. He served on a church deacon board and faithfully supported Christian ministries throughout his life. His faith was expressed not through grand gestures but through steady commitment and generosity.
Above all, Wayne loved his family. No one cooked as well as his wife, and he loved having family fill his house for meal time and holidays. His life was not defined simply by the years he lived or the work he accomplished, but by the relationships he valued and the generations who will carry his memory forward.
Wayne is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothea Mae Hogan; his brother, Robert Hogan and wife Brenda Hogan; his brother-in-law Doyle Lawrence and his wife Donna Lawrence; his brother-in-law Paul Baumann; his son, Lewis Wayne Hogan Jr., and wife, Rachel Hogan; his four grandchildren, Lewis Joshua Hogan, Jacob Reed Hogan and wife Brianna Hogan, Jonathan Graham Hogan, and Danielle Nicole Walker and husband Gus Walker; his five great-grandchildren: Emmerson Leigh Hogan, Charles Reed Hogan, Abigail Jane Hogan, Stewart Archer Walker, and Ada Mae Walker. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members throughout the Lubbock, Houston, and Dallas areas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis David Hogan and Marie Stewart Hogan; his daughter, Cheryl Denise Couglan; his sister, Lillian Baumann; his brother, Jerry Hogan; and his sister, Jan Haygood.
A graveside service honoring Wayne's life will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, October 15, 2026, Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock, Texas. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
For those who knew him as Wayne, he will be remembered as a quiet, hardworking man, a loyal friend, and a devoted Texas Tech fan. For those who knew him as Buddy, he will always be the husband, dad, “Papa”, brother, and family member who stayed in touch, loved a good joke, and wanted everyone to be careful.
His phone calls will be missed, his stories will be retold, and his love will continue to be felt through the generations of his family.
