John Sweeney

September 6, 1958 — December 1, 2022

Lubbock

John Vincent Sweeney Jr. was born in Dallas, Texas on September 6, 1958, the 5th of seven children to Kathleene Marie Carroll and John Vincent Sweeney. As a child, John attended St. Monica Catholic School on Walnut Hill Lane in Dallas; the family moved to Louisville, KY and then West Simsbury, CT following John’s father (and namesake) in his work for General Electric. But the Sweeneys returned to Dallas and John went to Marsh Junior High where he was a running back for the football team and, finally, W.T. White High School where he lettered in swimming and graduated in 1977.

John attended college at the University of Texas El Paso and, shortly after, started a construction and roofing business in Dallas. His love of building things started early with model airplanes and cars. His projects were meticulously built, painted, and displayed in his room as a child. That love of building and construction would guide his career.

John's work took him from Dallas, where he worked for Brooks Builders to San Angelo, Texas and then on to Lubbock in 1986 where he worked for Delbert McDougal during the early years coordinating construction of housing near the Texas Tech University as well as multiple locations around Lubbock. His love for his work never ceased. He was excited every day to go to work and make a difference. John had lifelong friends, made while building homes with and for others. He was a past President of the West Texas Home Builders Association, elected in 2008.

John was generous and loyal friend, brother, and coworker. He enjoyed mentoring younger coworkers and contributed more than his share to whatever team he was on. If you were one of John's many friends or worked with John, you knew he was a straight shooter and someone you could count on no matter what. John enjoyed spending time with his friends at Lake Allen Henry, Texas Motor Speedway, Live Rock-n-Roll Concerts, and Cowboy Football Games.

John passed peacefully in his sleep on December 1, 2022.  John is predeceased by his sister Margaret and parents John Vincent and Kathleene Sweeney. He is survived by his brothers, Frank Sweeney and wife Paula, Paul Sweeney and wife Kay, sisters Kathleen Stevenson and husband Rod, and Eileen and Mary Ann Sweeney. John had many nieces and nephews who adored him and appreciated his tutelage in poker and appreciation of loud Rock and Roll. He will be missed by all.
