Graveside services for Richard Dennis Westerfeld, 78, of Lubbock will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018, in the Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, Texas. He died Tuesday, June 12, at his home.

Born in Kingsville, Texas, on Nov. 2, 1939, to Wendell S. Westerfeld and Cora Helen Richter Westerfeld, he grew up in Midland, Texas. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. It was in Austin, on a blind date, that he met his future wife. He told his college roommate, after coming home from the date, that he’d met the woman he wanted to marry. He married Janis Jean Jackson on April 15, 1960, in Dallas. He worked as a registered civil engineer, retiring from the Texas Soil & Water Conservation Board in Hale Center a decade ago. He was recognized by the State of Texas in February 2017 for 50 years of service as a member of the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. He also worked in Arlington, Texas; Littlefield, Texas; and Odessa, Texas. He and his father co-owned Double W Enterprises in San Saba, Texas, for many years. He operated the Simmental cattle ranch and pecan farm. He and his wife raised their four daughters in San Saba before moving to Temple, Texas, and later, Lubbock. He was a loving husband, father and "grandpa," a good neighbor and a caretaker to anyone who needed assistance.

Survivors include his wife, Janis, of Lubbock; his four daughters, Sheri Westerfeld Lewis of Lubbock, Wendi Strei (Brian) of Jonestown, Texas; Marcie Thomas (Jeff) of McKinney, Texas; and Lori Westerfeld (Rich Castro) of Wailuku, Hawaii; six grandchildren, Blake Lewis and Tye Lewis of Lubbock, Jennifer Heath of Austin, Heather Strei of Jonestown, Nash Thomas of McKinney and Thatcher Westerfeld Castro of Wailuku; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Harrison; and his furry daughter, Sookie.
His parents preceded him in death, as did his beloved dog, Murphy.
