Harry Howell, 82, a longtime resident of O'Donnell, died Sunday, July 1, 2018. A celebration of life service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church O'Donnell, with Rev. Scott Hensley of First Baptist Church of Rule, TX officiating, burial will follow in the O'Donnell Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 p, at Combest Funeral Home in O'Donnell on Wednesday.

Harry Howell was born April 16, 1936, In Tahoka, TX to his parents Auborn and Martha (Hughes) Howell. Harry graduated from Levelland High School and attended business school. Harry worked as a bookkeeper for a gin and as a secretary for First Baptist Church of O'Donnell for 18 years. Harry was a faithful member of his Sunday school class and a member in good standing at the monthly meetings of XYZ church socials one a month. Harry served on the O'Donnell City Council for several years and as an active member of the Lions and Rotary Club. Harry will be remembered for his upbeat attitude toward life and God despite being in a wheelchair most of his life. He rolled all over town, visiting and discussing sports. He was an avid sports fan especially for the O'Donnell Eagles and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. However, he could discuss any sport and quote their stats.

Harry was an athlete. In the early 80s, he joined the Lubbock Basketball Red Roller team and played about 10 years. That same year he participated in the wheelchair Olympics In Denver Colorado in track. He won six gold medals. His events were 100, 200, 400 and the 800 dashes, the javelin throw, and the shot put.

Harry loved the Lord, his church, and his community as well as his family.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his brother A.J. Howell and his sister Bamah Sue Hutson.

Survivors include sister-in-law Jo Howell of Lubbock and brother-in-law James Hutson of Amarillo and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. His First Baptist Church family and the people of O'Donnell were also his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church Food Pantry.
