Alexandra Stevens

November 10, 1937 — May 20, 2026

Lubbock

Alexandra Stevens blessed us with her smile and wit for 88 wonderful years. On Wednesday, May 20, 2026 she departed to be in the comfort of the Lord in “The land of gentle breezes where the peaceful waters flow”. She passed in the company of her loving family.

Born on November 10, 1937, near Goldthwaite, Texas. Mary Mildred (Alexandra) Stevens first attended school in Priddy, Texas. With her family she migrated to Spade, Lubbock and finally to Morton where she graduated high school in 1956. One of her early jobs in Lubbock was as a Southwestern Bell switchboard operator when cables were manually connected to allow one phone to connect to another.

Her curiosity, sharp mind and fearlessness allowed her to reinvent herself many times from a small-town girl in poverty to a successful Art Dealer and Gallery owner in Houston. Kerrville, Carmel Ca, Taos and Santa Fe New Mexico.

After raising her children in Levelland and Lubbock a series of events led her to the world of art. She owned and published “The State of Art” in the 1980s as well as being an art dealer. In Taos she owned a Bed and Breakfast inn on Ski Valley Road in addition to Art Galleries. Her later years were in Santa Fe with a Gallery on Canyon Road.

Random encounters in and outside of the art business led to lifetime friendships with so many interesting and talented people from all over the world. She loved to tell of getting Elvis’s signature at a concert in Lubbock, knowing Waylon Jennings as a teenager, and having Julia Roberts, actor director Ron Howard and his wife Cheryl and other famous people as clients.

Many known artists credit her with their successful careers because she believed in them and gave them the opportunity to thrive.

In October 2020, Alexandra retired from the art world in Santa Fe, choosing to be with her family in Lubbock. She loved her family, friends, flowers, pets and 9 great grandchildren whom she adored.

She was known by Mildred to some, Alexandra by others and along the way she inherited the nickname “FLUFFY”. But by any name her red hair and beautiful smile will be missed by all.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Victoria Walden, Gary Max Walden, and Kathi Irwin and husband David, all of Lubbock.

Her grandchildren Keith, Steven and wife Lauren, Heather, Victoria and wife Dylan, and Laura as well as great-grandchildren Parker, Ava, Cade, Charlie, Reed, Thor, Tynlee, Sam, and Laramie will miss her greatly.

Alexandra was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Alexander and Lois (Reynolds) Stevens, and four siblings: Veonah, TJ, Alvis, and Edwin. She was the last in her generation of the Stevens family. A memorial visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the Venue on Broadway. (2202 Broadway in Lubbock) In lieu of flowers, donations to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, https://sfhumanesociety.org/donate/, would make her smile.
