Betty Jane Unfred

Betty Jane Unfred, a youthful 101 years old, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, October 1, 2024. Betty was born on November 6, 1922, in Marysville, Perry County, Pennsylvania, to the late Harry Walter Westfall and Jennie Agnes (Flickinger) Westfall. 

Betty attended Marysville High School, graduating with her senior class of 1940. Following high school, she attended Central Pennsylvania Business College from 1940 to 1942.

She met Joe D. Unfred, the love of her life, and they were united in marriage on July 17, 1943, in Marysville, Pennsylvania. Joe preceded her in death on July 13, 2001. 

Betty served as the secretary to the Superintendent of the New Home School District for 30 years, from 1958 until her retirement in 1988. She loved to sew and quilt, make porcelain dolls, do ceramic work and genealogy research. She served as a Sunday School teacher at New Home Baptist Church for 6 years, was a Girl Scout Leader for 12 years and was a den mother for the Cub Scouts for 2 years.  One of Betty's proud accomplishments was that she was the author of the memoirs Yankee in the Cotton Patch by Betty J. Unfred. Betty was a long-time member of New Home Baptist Church.

Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her children, David Unfred and wife Celeste of Lubbock, Nancy Nettles and husband Danny of Lubbock and Vicki Kreck and husband Michael of Lubbock. Her grandchildren include Steven Lear and wife Erin, Lindsay Lear, Matthew Unfred and wife Amber, Melissa Unfred, Cherie Balsam and husband Calvin, Angelique Liles and husband John, Genevieve Doyle and husband Peter, and Gabrielle Peterson and husband Caleb. Her great-grandchildren include Logan Lear, Cassidy Lear, Baylor Unfred, Bryson Unfred, Reagan Unfred, Jordan Unfred and fiancé Mallory Grimm, Jonathan Unfred and wife Katie, Breanna Balsam, Chelsea Balsam, Tyler Balsam, Alaura Balsam, Justin Spiegel and wife Ashley, Sydney Spiegel, Wren Doyle, Ezra Doyle, Noah Peterson, Judah Peterson, Aria Peterson and Hallel Peterson. Her great-great grandchildren include Harper Spiegel and Hudson Spiegel. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and husband. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, October 4, 2024, in the Combest Family Memorial Chapel, with Pastor L. J. Wright of New Home Baptist Church as the officiant. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, October 4, 2024, in Resthaven Memorial Park under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes.

The pallbearers will be Matthew Unfred, Jonathan Unfred, Randy Unfred, Jordan Unfred, Stacy Smith and Michael Kreck.
