Betty "Sue" Vaughn of Lubbock, formerly of O'Donnell/Lamesa, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2026 at the age of 92. She was born April 6, 1934, in Gober County, Texas to Henry Bradley and Goldie (Fortner) Smith. Sue's remarkable life was marked by resilience, unwavering strength, and a radiant sense of humor that endeared her to all who knew her. Raised in the Harmony Community, Sue attended school in O'Donnell where she met and married Don Vaughn on December 25, 1951. More than a decade ago, she and Don relocated to Lubbock, where she was a member of Southcrest Baptist Church.
Her life’s work as a devoted wife and mother took precedence until her children had grown and embarked on their own paths. It was then that Sue, along with a friend, published three cookbooks that shared her warmth, creativity, and zest for life’s simple pleasures. Alongside her husband Don, she delighted in traveling, creating treasured memories that spanned far beyond the horizons of their beloved Texas home.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Bruce Vaughn and wife Cathy of O'Donnell, Brenda Sykes and husband Jack of San Angelo, and Babette Vaughn and husband Bubba Holloway of La Porte; grandchildren: Charlie, Jimmy, Wade, and Kyle Vaughn, and Colby, Christopher, and Cameron Sykes; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don Vaughn, in 2016; and one son, Brad Vaughn, in 2010.
