Billy Melvin Barry

Billy Melvin Barry, 84, of Slaton, Texas, passed away surrounded by his family on August 21, 2026, just three days after celebrating his 84th birthday. He was born in Plainview, Texas, to Marvin Daymond Barry and Jewell Lea Lahue

Billy graduated from Slaton High School in 1960, where he enjoyed playing football and basketball and competing in track. After high school, he began his railroad career, working his way through the ranks as a switchman, brakeman, and conductor before becoming an engineer. He retired from BNSF Railway as an engineer after a long and successful career.

On February 13, 1968, Billy married the love of his life, Rita Ann Hess. They shared 58 years of marriage and built a life centered around their family.  Billy was a hardworking, determined man with a tough spirit and a strong sense of what was right. He was also a man of deep faith who loved studying the Bible. His faith helped shape the caring man he became. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help others, often willing to give someone the shirt off his back.

Billy loved fishing, especially saltwater fishing at South Padre Island. He enjoyed traveling in search of the big catch, but any day spent fishing was a good day in his eyes. He also enjoyed golfing, studying history, and most of all, telling stories. Whether recounting his days on the railroad, a fishing adventure, or simply something that happened that day, Billy always had a story to tell.

 Above all, Billy treasured his family. He loved them deeply and would do anything for them. His strength, determination, faith, humor, and willingness to stand up for what he believed in will remain a lasting part of his legacy.Billy is survived by his wife, Rita Ann Barry; son Bobby Barry and wife, Minnie; daughters Jody Marriott and husband, Greg, and Daymona Hunsucker and husband, Randy; seven grandchildren and spouses; 13 great-grandchildren; and loving cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Daymond Barry and Jewell Lea Lahue, and his brother, Ronald Barry.Billy will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, hardworking railroad man, avid fisherman, storyteller, and man of strong faith. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

There will be a celebration of life held on Thursday, August 27th at 3 PM at the Kessel Building 106 Texas Avenue Slaton, Texas, 79364.
