Carroll Hughes, 85, of Lubbock and loving husband of Mary Hughes, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday evening, April 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 5, 1940, in Blue Mountain, Logan County, Arkansas, to the late George Carroll Hughes and Pauline (White) Hughes. He moved to Hockley County in Texas with his family as a small child, before coming to Lubbock at 6 years of age.
Carroll was a man of many trades. He owned and operated Hughes Trucking Company for about 9 years and performed auto body work and excelled in the restoration of antique vehicles. He loved to read everything he could. He loved the land and enjoyed farming. Carroll was “a man with a hobby” and in his younger years, those were adventurous. From bronco riding in the rodeo to sprint car racing, piloting his own airplane and owning his own race horses, Carroll would study (and this was prior to the internet) and conquer the challenge. Carroll was one of the charter members of Quaker Avenue Church of Christ.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his wife, Mary of Lubbock; his children: Darla Hubble, Tammy Hayden, Lisa Lykes (Joe), Keith Hughes (Larita), Deedee Noles (Jerry), Danny Hughes and enjoyed a blended family with two additional daughters: Terri Blassingame (Billy) and Shari Turnbow (Andy). He is also survived by many, many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as many extended family members. The family would like to acknowledge “Special Friend’s” to the family, Debbie Simpson, who has provided strength, guidance and encouragement to the family, as well as Erin Kenyon, Don and Maggie Armstrong, Lena Kusic, and Maryann and Aurelio (Pep) Garcia. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Georgene Davis and Brenda Underwood, and a granddaughter, Bridgett VanStory.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway, next door to Combest Family Funeral Home. Carroll’s life will be celebrated at 2 PM on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in the auditorium of Quaker Avenue Church of Christ, 1701 Quaker Avenue, Lubbock, TX 79416, with David Langford and Shawn Tyler officiating. Private burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Home.
Carroll's family gives a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Charles Addington, a good friend, Dr. Weil Tello and Dr. Mounir Borno.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Carroll may do so by considering a donation to the East African Mission Fund at Quaker Avenue Church of Christ, 1701 Quaker Avenue, Lubbock, TX 79416.
