Cora A. Yowell

Cora A. Yowell, 80, of Lubbock, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 18, 2023.  Cora was born on May 8, 1942, in Richlands, Tazewell County, Virginia, to the late Ellsworth Mullins and Clara Laura (Moore) Mullins.

Cora attended schools in the Richlands/Tazewell school district before going on to earn her Bachelors of Arts degree in Spanish with a minor in Physical Education in 1963.  Committed to education, she taught High School in the Prince William County Virginia Public Schools from  1966-1990.   She became an Academic Advisor for the Texas Tech University System from 1994 until 2020.

She met the love of her life, Thomas William Yowell, and they were united in marriage on April 25, 1969 in Aden, Virginia.  Mr. Yowell preceded her in death on August 31, 2008.

Cora has lived in the Lubbock community since 1990.  She devoted her life to teaching, reading and furthering her education.  Her passion included being a mentor sharing wisdom and encouragement to all she came in contact with.  She became an Academic Advisor for the Texas Tech University System from 1994 until 2020, teaching Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) remedial courses to help struggling students succeed in their academic endeavors.  She was a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church.

Cora leaves behind her son, Thomas Love and his wife Lynn, as well as a grandson, Dallas Love, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Novack, and a great-grandson, Christian Mills; her cousin Jenny Cooper, and her brother-in-laws, Charles A. Yowell, Sr., and Donald Stallard.  In addition, she is survived by a multitude of nieces including: B. J. Eldien, Robin Hereford and Tasha Perreault and great-nieces, Aubrey, Candice and Courtney. She is also survived by nephews Harold Jones; Tim Jones, and Charles A. Yowell Jr.  Cora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Tammy R. Bivens, her brother David E. Mullins and a grandson, William Travis Love.

Graveside inurnment services for Cora will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, March 4, 2023, in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.  Dana Mayfield will be the officiant.  Cremation arrangements and inurnment services are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations, in Cora’s memory, be made to Texas Tech Athletics Department, 2508 6th Street, Lubbock, TX 79409 or to Women’s Protective Services in Lubbock, 1622 10th Street, Lubbock, TX 79401.
