Dorothy Jean Leech

Dorothy Jean Leech, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully passed away on June 24, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on October 3, 1941, in the warm embrace of family in Clovis, NM. Dorothy's sweet spirit and generous heart touched the lives of all who knew her.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Robert Owen Leech on December 21, 1961, in Amarillo, Texas. They shared a beautiful life together for over 40 years, until his passing in 2001.

She earned her Bachelor's Degree in teaching from Hardin-Simmons University, laying the foundation for her impactful career and devotion to education.

As a devoted teacher, Dorothy dedicated her life to nurturing young minds and administering compassion to her students. Her last 24 years of teaching were here in Lubbock, at Guadalupe Elementary School. She poured her heart into her students and was a beloved teacher for 34 years.

Her commitment to teaching extended beyond the traditional classroom, as she taught Sunday School for third graders at Oakwood Baptist Church for over 40 years. Owen and Dorothy became members of OBC in their mid-20's, and after his passing she continued to remain faithful until Alzheimer's began to take its toll. But even then, she maintained a graceful and cheerful spirit to those around her. Dorothy embodied the values of kindness, compassion, and service to others. She lived her faith.

Her home was a welcoming haven, a vibrant central meeting spot where family and friends could gather to create lasting memories. Deeply involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren, she was their unwavering cheerleader, ensuring they had every opportunity to participate in sporting events, music performances, and church activities.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Scott Leech, and his wife Denise; her daughter, Rhonda Thornton; sisters Mary "Mimi" Vincent and her husband Richard, Sherrie Cox and her husband Atticus, and Judy Burns; her grandchildren, Matthew, Laura, Andrew, Luke, Cason, Collier; and great-grandchildren, Avery and Jordan. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, H.L. Scott and Mary Lois Bush.

The family will receive friends for a public viewing on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Venue on Broadway, located at 2202 Broadway, Lubbock, TX 79401.

A funeral service in honor of Dorothy's life will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 10:00 AM at One Accord Fellowship Church, 6002 Avenue U, Lubbock, TX 79412. Following the service, a private family burial will take place, allowing the family to cherish their final moments together as they bid farewell to their beloved matriarch.

Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating the faithful legacy Dorothy leaves behind, characterized by her dedication to love, family, and education. She will forever remain in the hearts of those she has touched.

Blue was mom's favorite color, and she also loved bright colors. Feel free to wear either in her honor.
