George William Clay III, 95, passed away October 4, 2022, in Lubbock, TX. He was born October 13, 1926, in Dallas, TX to Leon Gibert and Dorothy (Schuster) Clay. He attended Highland Park High School and graduated in 1944 and then joined the Navy and served on the USS Cabot aircraft carrier until 1946. He married Margaret Elizabeth McAllister May 28, 1955. He was in the cotton business from shortly after returning from WWII, working with his father and several others and continued in the business until he retired in his 60’s from W.B. Dunavant & Company. He was President of the Lubbock Cotton Exchange in 1982 and Texas Cotton Association in 1985. He enjoyed fishing and hunting his whole life until just a couple of years before his death.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Dorothy Clay and his brother Leon Clay. Survivors are his wife of 67 years, Margaret “Peggy”, 3 children, George William Clay IV (Dana), Julie Ann Zager (Michael) and Samuel David Clay; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Naus (Peter), George William Clay V (Brooke), Dale Raymond Clay (Sarah), Allison Zager and Samuel Zager; and 12 great grandchildren, Jake, Luke, John Thomas, and Anne Kathryn Naus; Lottie Lane, Mary Kate and Grace Anne Clay; Logan, Avery, Adeline and Olivia Clay; and Calvin Schoonover.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 2:00PM at Combest Family Funeral Home in Lubbock, Texas. The family suggests memorial donations to Lubbock Meals on Wheels where George volunteered for 15 years.
