Isabel Chavez, 88, a beloved matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 24, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on November 19, 1936, in Cameron, Texas, she was the daughter of Epifanio and Clara (Barela) Zapata. Isabel's journey through life was marked by a deep commitment to her family. She married Manual V. Chavez on April 27, 1961 in Lubbock. Together they planted their roots in Lubbock where Isabel flourished as a homemaker raising their six children. With a keen sense of purpose, she also owned her own cleaning service, showcasing her industrious nature and dedication to providing for her loved ones. Isabel was not one to seek the limelight; she was known for her witty charm and respectful demeanor, epitomizing grace with her few yet meaningful words.
Her faith was an integral part of her life, as she devoted over 60 years to St. Joseph Catholic Church, reflecting her steadfast commitment to her spiritual beliefs. A proud member of the Guadalupana's and the Catholic Daughters, Isabel found solace and community within her faith, forging lasting friendships along the way. An avid fan of Texas Tech Athletics and the Dallas Cowboys, she cheered fervently for her teams, embodying the spirit of loyalty and love for her community. She enjoyed the simple pleasures enjoying a hamburger, french fries, and coke—foods that spoke to her warm and welcoming nature.
Isabel leaves behind four children, Micaela C. Perez and husband Frankie, Alice C. Vasquez and husband Arthur, Juan G. Chavez and wife Nina, all of Lubbock, and Enrique Chavez of Dallas; siblings, Juanita Garcia, Cecilia Aguirre, Carmen Cortez and husband Santos, Andrea Vidaurre, and Benita Zapata; sister-in-law, Fina Zapata; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Isabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Manuel V. Chavez in 2014; sons, Edward J. Chavez and Carlos M. Chavez; and brothers, Mario, Luis, and Domingo Zapata.
Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm Thursday, May 29, 2025 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel with rosary beginning at 6:30 pm. Mass will be at 10:30 am Friday, May 30, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with interment to follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Ismael and Frances Trevino, Kayla Hernandez, Mattie Harris and Hospice of Lubbock for the love and care they provided. Isabel’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, laughter, and resilience. As we remember her, may we carry forward her spirit of generosity and grace.
