Jane DeKay, who graced this world with her kindness and warmth, passed away peacefully in Lubbock Texas, on July 27, 2025. Born on January 22, 1949 in Williamsport Pennsylvania, Jane was a cherished daughter of John and Anna Sornberger, both of whom have preceded her in death.
Jane's journey through life was adorned with love for her family and friends. She was a woman who flourished in the presence of her loved ones. Professionally, Jane dedicated numerous years to her career with the U.S. Department of State, a testament to her unwavering work ethic and passion for public service. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed a well-deserved respite, filled with the pursuits that brought her joy. She never shied from seeking knowledge and enjoyment through her hobbies. She delighted in reading, immersing herself in various narratives through book clubs, and often found solace in games like solitaire that provided a welcome retreat from the bustle of life.
Those who knew Jane would fondly remember her infectious sense of humor and her remarkable gift for making others feel at ease. Her personality radiated kindness, an essence that made her a friend to many and a source of strength and support to those who had the privilege to share in her life.
She was married to the love of her life husband, Thomas DeKay until his death. Left to carry on her legacy are her loving children: Sarah DeKay, Matthew DeKay, and Petra Bothe. Each of them holds within their hearts cherished memories of a mother whose love knew no bounds. Jane also leaves behind her special granddaughter, whose radiant spirit echoes the joy that Jane so freely gave, as well as her dear sister, Cathy Mitchell, who remains a connection to Jane's vibrant past.
A memorial service to honor the life of Jane DeKay will be held on August 25, 2025, at Combest Family Funeral Home in Lubbock, Texas. This gathering will serve as a celebration of her life—a life lovingly interwoven with stories, laughter, and the unbreakable bonds of family.
