Karen McCleery

Karen McCleery passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026, in Lubbock, surrounded by her beloved family at the age of 71. She was born October 8, 1954, in Austin, Texas. At a young age, the family moved to San Angelo where she graduated from Lakeview High School. Initially earning her Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) certification, she devoted her early years to raising her children before furthering her education becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). After the passing of her husband in 2017, Karen earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Her professional journey began in Abilene, moving to Lubbock in 2005 at which time she worked for Covenant Medical Center (2005-2007), and ultimately finding her home at University Medical Center until her retirement.

Karen was marked by her tenacity and work ethic, often described as stubborn yet undeniably hardworking—qualities that served her well both in her personal life and professional endeavors. She found joy in traveling whenever possible and cherished the moments spent in the tranquility of the mountains, reveling in nature’s beauty which seemed to reflect the peace that her heart longed for.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Nolen Scott McCleery and wife Beverly and Sara Shea McCleery, all of Lubbock; grandchildren, Devin, Alyssa, Kaylee, and Taylan; great-grandchildren, Adam and Emersyn; and mother-in-law, Alta McCleery of Lubbock. Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Nolen "Lucky" McCleery, Jr. and two brothers, Ronnie Ashmore and Leighton Holloway.

A visitation to honor Karen's life will take place from 1:00-5:00 pm, Friday, February 20, 2026 at Combest Family Funeral Home in Lubbock.
