Lynwood Alois Kreneck

Lynwood Kreneck passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, surrounded by family after a lengthy illness

Lynwood was born on June 11, 1936 on a farm near Kenedy, Texas with no electricity or running water. Despite a rough beginning he made his way to the University of Texas at Austin and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree. He met his future wife, Eleanor Rude at UT. They married in 1959, had 3 children and spent 66 happy years together.

Lynwood accepted a teaching position at Texas Tech University in Lubbock in 1965, where he taught printmaking for 40 years, inspiring and changing the lives of decades of students - retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 2005.

In 1969, Lynwood founded what would become an international print show “ColorPrint USA.” As part of this endeavor, Lynwood traveled extensively to find new and exciting artists and their work to feature in the show.

Ten books contain major articles or reproductions of Lynwood’s artwork. Lynwood wrote a book which revolutionized printmaking by introducing the use of water-base screen-printing. Another book, written by A. Isabelle Howe, chronicled his life and art and contained more than 100 reproductions of his work.

During his lengthy career, Lynwood was invited to over 80 universities and colleges both in the United States and abroad. His artwork was included in over 200 national and international invitational and juried exhibitions where he garnered more than 40 prizes and honors.

More than 60 museums and universities acquired Lynwood’s prints to include in their permanent collections including the United States Embassies, the Chicago Art Institute and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Museum of Texas Tech University honored Lynwood with a retrospective exhibition of his art in 2003, and in 2022 he was the featured artist in the Art on the Llano event of the TTU Museum Association.

In 2006, Lynwood received the lifetime achievement award for Excellence In Teaching Printmaking at the Southern Graphics International Conference.

In 2023 the City of Lubbock honored Lynwood with an induction into the West Texas Walk of Fame in Lubbock.

Through it all he used his quick wit and humor to entertain his family and friends and also to deal with obstacles.

Lynwood is preceded in death by his parents, LaFrance Garrett and Louis Kreneck.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, son Kevin Kreneck and wife Susan Quevedo, daughter Karol Clary and husband Ken, and daughter Keri Williams and husband Steve. Also surviving are granddaughters, Deanna Trudeau and husband Jude Murro, Danielle Trudeau and wife Lauren Schachter, and great granddaughter, Isabel Schachter-Trudeau. Also left to mourn his loss are Joe C. Rude MD and wife Carolyn, Franklin Rude MD and wife Phillis, and Elizabeth Rude Buell.

Graveside services will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, August 21, 2025, in the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Father Jose Kochuparambil, of Christ the King Cathedral Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant. Final rites and interment will be under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Home.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 4 PM on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Christ the King Cathedral Catholic Church.
