Marilyn Vieregge, 75, of Lubbock died peacefully at home, March 7, 2026.
Marilyn was born December 16, 1950, in Plainview to John McDonough and Barbara (Mickey) McDonough. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1969 and attended Lubbock Christian College, where she graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education.
Marilyn dedicated her life to education and teaching. She taught high school English and Political Science. She first taught in Alvin, Texas and then at Abernathy High School. She then worked at the Lubbock Education Service Center for 33 years, from 1985 to 2018. In 2017, she received the AMET Lifetime Achievement Award for her work with the Texas Migrant Education Program, and in 2018, she received the David Cobb Service Award.
Marilyn loved talking with her children, Mandy and Quentin; she always wanted to know when her “chickens” were home. She would talk to them about anything, including current events, movies, tv shows, and religion. She enjoyed going on adventures with them, whether it was to get a coke at Taco Villa, to buy something at Kohl’s, or to go see a movie.
She loved going “beeboppin’” around town with Mandy and helping Quentin with his writing. She, Terry, and the children had a tradition of going out to eat, which they did whenever they were all together. The four also loved watching “Only Murders in the Building” together.
She loved talking to her parents and siblings. She was proud of them all, and she was proud to be a McDonough. She loved the color red and took her time finding just the perfect shade for her purses, clothes, and eye glasses. And she most definitely loved Elvis. She was a dedicated wife and caretaker for her husband during his health issues. Her favorite Bible verses were John 14:2 and Isaiah 40:31.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry, her parents, and her brother, Mike McDonough.
Survivors include daughter Amanda “Mandy” of Lubbock; son Quentin of Rice Lake, Wisc.; brothers Doug of Plainview and Mitchell of Hereford; and her sister, Michelle of Silverton.
Marilyn had a deep faith in God and loved going to church at Quaker Avenue Church of Christ. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by those who loved her.
Celebration of Life Memorial Services for Marilyn will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in the auditorium of Quaker Avenue Church of Christ, 1701 Quaker Avenue, Lubbock. Cremation arrangements and memorial services are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
