Lubbock

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life and faith of Mary Ruth Hargett Evans, 88, of Lubbock at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at Combest Family Memorial Chapel with burial to follow at Resthaven Mausoleum.  The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Combest Family Funeral Homes.  Mary was received into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, May 13, 2014.

Mary was born in Lynn County, Tahoka on July 26, 1925 to H.O. and Mattie Hargett.  She graduated from Tahoka High School and married her high school sweetheart Boyce Evans on May 9, 1942 in Wichita Falls.  After serving in World War II and the Korean War, they were blessed with three children, Evan, Suzanne and David.

During her life, Mary wore many hats.  In addition to being a preacher’s wife and mother to three, she followed her husband in the ministry and travelled the nation in evangelism for 50 years.  Travelling with the “Cowboy Preacher” by car, airplane, and motor home was quite the “adventure”.  She also raised two granddaughters and provided a home for many other children along the way.  She was a warm, loving lady who played the piano, dominos, Pollyanna, and enjoyed entertaining, hunting, travelling, golfing, and shopping with friends and family.  “Granny” as she was fondly known was famous for her turkey and dressing, red velvet cake and strawberry salad.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lubbock and lived an abundant and faithful life!

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Boyce; daughter, Suzanne Evans Granbury; niece, Judy Sanchez; and infant twin sisters.  She is survived by her sons, Evan and wife Carolyn of Edmond, Oklahoma and David “Slim” and wife Linda of Lubbock; sister, Imogene Hines of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Tonya Brown and husband Todd of Carrollton, Marcy Helms and husband Joe of Hickory Creek, Mandy Masters and husband Cody  of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Tyson Evans of Santa Monica, California; great-grandchildren, Sara Brown, Hanah Brown, Gunner Helms, Brittney Helms, Andrew Helms, Tanner Masters, and Annalise Masters; niece, Patti Malouff and husband Mike of Albuquerque, great nephew, Stephen Sanchez and wife Robyn of Albuquerque, and Lilly, her furry, four-legged little girl.

The Evan’s family would like to express sincere appreciation to the entire staff at Crown Point Health Suites for the loving care provided to Mary.  Special thanks go to “Big” Wallace, Sarah Shackleford, Shawn Gray,  Letty Hernandez, Neissley Tapia, Dianne Reyes, Ryn Furgerson, Janice Heald, Maria Rivas, Colt Talley, Desiree Martinez, and Jessica Morales.

Memorial donations can be made to the Evangelism Department of First Baptist Church, 2201 Broadway, Lubbock, Texas 79401 or to your favorite charity.
