Maria Alicia Torres, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, peacefully passed from this life to be with our Lord on February 17, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on October 22, 1945, in San Marcos, Texas, to the late Yasias Olvera and Epifania Castro, she was a beacon of warmth and strength, whose influence will be felt in the hearts of all who knew her.
Mary was one of six sisters, sharing her childhood with the late Cecilia Olvera, Alma Ramirez, Nora Camargo, Janie Coy, and Irene Camacho. In 1966, she met her soulmate, Heladio Torres, at his 18th birthday celebration. They were united in holy matrimony on July 11, 1966, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, forming a loving partnership that lasted 57 years. Together, they devoted their lives to serving the Lord, becoming integral members of their community through their unwavering faith.
As a proud mother to six sons and one daughter, Heladio Torres Jr., Andrew Torres Sr., Tommy Torres, Mario Torres (Donna Marie), Dora Alicia Rodriguez (Jaime), Alexander Torres, and Adam Isaac Torres; Mary embraced her role with open arms and a generous spirit. Blessed with 28 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, along with an expected great-grandchild due in September 2025, her love for her family was boundless. She welcomed all into her home, ensuring they were fed not only with her famous tamales but with love and laughter.
Mary was a devoted cursillista, a proud Guadalupana, and a steadfast parishioner who left a legacy of faith and service for her children and grandchildren to follow. She embodied the spirit of Proverbs 31, reflecting strength, wisdom, and an unwavering trust in God.
Mary is preceded in death by her in-laws, Guadalupe and Amador Torres Sr., as well as her beloved grandchildren: Santiago Martinez, Alexander Torres Jr., Priscilla Torres, and Jeremiah Theadore Duck, Robert Adrian Torres and Rose Michelle Torres. Although she will be profoundly missed, her family finds solace in the cherished memories and love she leaves behind.
The family invites all who wish to honor Mary’s remarkable life to join them for visitation at Combest Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, February 25th, beginning at 2 PM, followed by a Rosary at 6:30 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 AM, with interment to follow at the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Mary’s legacy of love and kindness will forever resonate in the hearts of all she touched.
