Michael (Mike) Stephenson, born March 25, 1949, in Levelland, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home in Lubbock on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the age of 76.
A 1967 graduate of Monterey High School, Mike went on to attend Texas Tech University before devoting much of his life to his work as a catastrophe insurance adjuster. Family and friends always knew that if a roof leaked, a wall cracked, or an electrical issue arose, Mike would arrive with his toolbox in hand, ready to help. His practical skill, steady presence, and willingness to show up for others defined him both personally and professionally.
Mike’s passion for his work matched his adventurous spirit, leading him and his wife of 58 years, Marsha, across the country and around the world. Together, they worked more than 50 natural disasters in 38 states and New Zealand, responding to earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. When word came that a disaster was imminent or had already struck, Mike would load up his RV with everything he needed to live and work independently, then drive straight into areas without power or running water. He often found the First Responders staging area and, if he was “lucky,” would quietly fall in line behind their convoy to reach the communities most devastated.
Over the course of his career, Mike assisted more than 5,000 individuals and 1,000 businesses in beginning the process of rebuilding their lives. If you have ever seen the traffic fleeing a hurricane on the news and wondered who would be driving toward the storm instead, Mike was one of those determined few.
In 2011, Mike and Marsha traveled to New Zealand following the Christchurch earthquake, one of the most severe disasters in the country’s history.
Mike is survived by his wife, Marsha Stephenson; his children, Scotty Stephenson and wife Marina of Carrollton, and Wendy Harper and husband Sid of Bryan; his siblings, Pat Stephenson and wife JoAnn of Lubbock, and Tammy Keck and husband Ricky of Ropesville. He leaves behind quite a legacy, 14 grandchildren, Lacey, Sydnie (husband Jeran), Baylie (husband Ezra), Jonathan Michael, Tate, Emmy, Kenlie, Katherine, Alex, Charlie, Levi, Elijah, Mercy and Silas. Two great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Hazel, and two more are due soon, and Mandy, a precious granddaughter born in his heart.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, November 24, 2025, at South Plains Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, 1356 NM-236 Portales, NM 88130, https://www.nmcch.org/
