Norman was born on June 23, 1942 in Amherst, Texas to Freddie D. Clayton and Emily Hawkins Clayton. He was raised in Earth, Texas and graduated from Springlake-Earth High School. When he wasn’t fishing, he could be found reading his Bible or a good western novel. He also enjoyed a game of cribbage.
