Peter Aaron Keltz, 33, of Lubbock, and well-known artist and horticulturist, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. He was born on December 13, 1988, in Lubbock to Larry and Sandy Keltz. Peter grew up in Plainview and attended Plainview schools. From an early age, his talent and love for art became very evident, as well as his love of skateboarding and drumming.
Peter was implemental in obtaining a skate park in the City of Plainview. He worked with local city and citizen groups in convincing the city council to build and maintain a skate park in a local city park. He also had an interest in professional modeling. He trained with the Diane Dick Agency in Amarillo where he also assisted in teaching modeling and editing modeling photography. He participated in IMTA competition in New York City and received contract offers from other agencies. He expanded his interests in art, plants, and skating by opening small shops by selling plants, art, and skate supplies. He currently worked out of Studio C in the CASP art district, where he sculpted plants, painted art and arranged terrariums and succulent pots.
Peter was one of the founding members of the 806 Collective because he wanted to be involved with other artists, making new things grow in a place where you can be creative. He was also a founding member of the BLNKA Collective out of Houston. He was an inspiration to others and encourager to those up-and-coming artists.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his parents, Larry and Sandy Keltz of Lubbock; one brother, Joel Dean Keltz of Austin; one sister, Leah Kay Chavez of Petersburg; a nephew, Kyler Brain of Petersburg; nieces, Morgan Keltz of Petersburg and Alexandra Keltz of Lubbock; his father’s brothers, Terry Keltz of Brady and Kelly Keltz of Roaring Springs; his mother’s brother, Randy Cognasi of Alabama and sister, Kandy Decker of Plainview. He is also survived by a host of extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bennie and June Keltz; maternal grandparents, Ray Cognasi, and Lenore and Willie Penton; an uncle, Andrew “Peanut” Cognasi. He was loved by and leaves behind many friends and acquaintances.
A time of reflection and visitation for Peter will be held from 6 PM to 8 PM on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway. Celebration of Life services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, November 11, 2022, at Church on the Rock – South Campus, 10503 Slide Road, Lubbock, Texas 79424. Pastors Steve Martinez, Steve Rogers and Rick Mitchell will be the officiants. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
Pallbearers will be Joel Keltz, Harlan Hodges, Michael Gowman, Dave Clayton, Daniel Clayton, and Sam Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bryan Magallanes, Matt Smith, David Allen, Mario Guel, Rustin Rogers and Cody Russell.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Peter's memory to the Peter Keltz Memorial Fund, c/o Community Foundation of West Texas, 6102 82nd Street, Suite 8b, Lubbock, TX 79424.
