Rex Eldon Febus, 75, of Lubbock passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025. He was born November 1, 1949, in Issaquah, Washington. After struggling most of his school years Rex Febus moved in with his dad and was mentored by his wrestling coach. Because of his relationship with his dad and his wrestling coach he graduated from Issaquah high school in 1967 and was inspired to become a coach. He earned a teaching degree from Central Washington University.
He taught woodshop and coached wrestling in Oak Ridge Oregon, and later in Mount Vernon, Washington where he launched and ran a successful youth wrestling program. He invested in the lives of countless students and athletes over his lifetime and loved his wrestlers deeply. In October of 2011, at the age of 61 he entered the world open for wrestling held in Albania and placed 3rd in his age bracket. He spent time in Uruguay, where he coached the first ever Olympic wrestling team in Uruguay, and developed a craving for jalapeño pancakes. After Uruguay, he moved to Lubbock, Texas where he taught in the Lubbock Independent School District before retiring to experiment with new, sustainable and regenerative gardening methods. As a lover of all things learning, he enjoyed studying law and used his knowledge to help others in whatever legal battles they faced. Due to his love of wrestling and his extensive influence on the sport and athletes in three states and two countries, the “Rex Febus Outlaw Novice Tournament,” presently held in Oak Harbor, WA, was named after him. He was predeceased by his beloved dogs Tio and Lily, and his father.
He is survived by his ex-wife and still best friend, Margaret Febus, his four adult children, Jesseca Randall, Odenton, MD; Jennifer Slattery, Papillon, NE.; Jeanie Greene Stanley, VA; and Raymond Febus, Turkey; six grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to a youth wrestling program.
