Dr. Roger Bryan Yandell, born September 3rd, 1954, in Lubbock, Texas, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedicated service. Born to Raymond Yandell and Mickey Rennels Yandell, Roger's life was one of kindness, curiosity, and an unwavering devotion to the people he cared for, both in his family and his profession.
Roger was a gifted surgeon and doctor of obstetrics and gynecology who found great purpose and pride in his work. He has been with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center since 2006, where he worked as a Professor of OBGYN and Urology and the Chief of Gynecology. He began his career at the University of Texas Medical Branch - Galveston, where he completed his residency in 1984. Known for his steady hands and gentle heart, he touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues over the years, always offering comfort, skill, and a sharp wit that could lighten even the most difficult moments. He always maintained that private practice was not for him because it meant he would no longer be able to teach OBGYN residents and medical students.
Outside the hospital, Roger found joy in the arts, sailing, and sports. A talented cellist, he performed with the Galveston Symphony Orchestra. He loved classical and rock music, and if you ever found yourself listening to music with him, you know how he loved to pick apart each song note by note. Sailing was another of Roger’s great passions. He enjoyed sailboat racing on the Creola, a Santana 35. He loved taking part in the yearly Harvest Moon Regatta from Galveston to Port Aransas. A passionate Red Raider from birth, Texas Tech alumni, and former Lubbock High football player, he enjoyed few things more than watching football with family and friends.
Roger is survived by his three beloved children: Roger Bryan Yandell II (Shelly), Connor Yandell (Wendy), and Megan Webb (Drew); his treasured grandchildren: Liam Yandell, Brynlee Yandell, and Elise Webb; and his brother, Gregory Yandell (Fran), as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. His intelligence, humor, and deeply caring nature are among the things that will be missed the most by those who loved and knew him.
Roger Yandell will be remembered as a man of immense talent, sharp intellect, and a heart full of kindness. He was someone you could talk to for hours and would never say no to a friendly face. He loved his work as a physician and surgeon and was so proud of the lives he helped and the babies he brought into the world. He was a wonderful father and Pop Pop, and his unconditional love for his family will always be remembered. His memory will sail on in the lives he touched.
He will be dearly missed.
