Ronald Eugene Byers, known to everyone as Ronny, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025.
Ronny was born in Slaton on May 30, 1937 to William Odell Byers and Clara Estelle Glasscock Byers. He attended various schools in West Texas, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1955. He was a devoted husband to Beverly Kay Knowles whom he married on August 30, 1962. They have three daughters, Lorri Clark, Paige Terry, and Kasey Byers and sons-in-law Chad Terry and Jeremy Clark. Ronny was affectionately known as Papa to Slade Terry, Race Terry Anderson and husband, Cole, and Canyon Clark. He attended many football and basketball games, track meets, band concerts, orchestra concerts, Master Follies shows for Slade, Sing Song shows for Race and Cole, Canyon’s music performances at SPC, all college graduations and Race and Cole’s wedding. He recently took great joy in becoming a great grandpapa to Eden Anderson.
Following in the family footsteps, Ronny began a lifelong career in cotton farming. He farmed land in Acuff, Anton, and Shallowater, harvesting his last cotton crop at the age of 80. He developed lifelong friendships in the farming community, enjoyed time spent at farm sales with his buddies and riding around checking on friend’s crops to make sure they were keeping the weeds down.
In addition to being a lifelong farmer, Ronny was an enthusiastic ham radio operator. He joined the Possum Trappers Ham Radio Club in 1979. He loved talking with these great friends on the ham radio nightly at 10:30. The guys would join in on the radio and would talk about daily life and jokingly would solve the world’s problems. He met up with the members once or twice a year at Radio Swap Fests both in Texas and Oklahoma. He wore his ham radio caps with pride that bore his call sign, KC5NP.
He enjoyed drinking hot Dr Peppers, wearing suspenders, watching westerns, fishing trips with friends to Possum Kingdom, listening to music, loving on his dogs, attending antique car shows and eating chicken fried steak, and in his youth he and his brother, Don, loved racing both cars and motorcycles and have many trophies from those days.
Ronny was funny and witty, patient and thoughtful, easy going and hard working. He was kind to everyone. He fought the good fight, overcame adversity and enjoyed life in every little way. He impacted a lot of lives. He was so loved and will be so missed.
Ronny is survived by his wife Beverly Byers; daughters and sons-in-law Lorri & Jeremy Clark, Paige & Chad Terry and Kasey Byers; grandchildren, Slade Terry, Race & Cole Anderson, and Canyon Clark; great granddaughter, Eden; brother Don Byers and wife Sherry; brother-in-law Larry Knowles and wife Linda; sister-in-law Carole Bayles and husband Jim Clark; nieces and nephews Greg Byers, Rhonda Byers Pool, Hutch Haley, Paul Haley, Caron McMillian, Aaron Bayles, Benjamin Bayles, Micah Bayles Baker, Candace Bayles Walker, Rachael Knowles Schulle, Amy Knowles Stovell and their families.
In ham radio code, the number 73 means best regards, goodbye, thanks, or hope to see you again soon. So, “73 from Ronny, KC5NP”.
