Ruben Arguijo Champion, Sr.

September 15, 1943 — September 12, 2022

Lubbock

Ruben Arguijo Champion, Sr., 78, of Lubbock, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday afternoon, September 12, 2022.  Mr. Champion was born to the late William Jackson Champion and Adela (Arguijo) Champion.

Ruben attended and graduated from Petersburg High School.

Ruben met Romelia Favila, the love of his life, and they were united in marriage on November 21, 1964, in Sonora, Texas.  Out of this blessed union, they bore 2 sons and 1 daughter.

Mr. Champion worked as a professional, self-employed carpet installer for 52 years, before retiring in 2017.  He was an avid Texas Tech University football fan, with his favorite coach being Spike Dykes.  Ruben was very family centered and oriented, who had a fond love for his grandchildren.  He loved to cook out, especially brisket and steaks.  He enjoyed working in his yard, making it immaculate, of which he had friends and neighbors highly compliment him on.  Ruben also loved to clip recipes to try out.  As a proud neighborhood leader, he would help his neighbors with anything they needed and he would give them the shirt off his back, if called for.

Ruben and his wife started out in Lubbock as members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for over 10 years, where he was the head of the men’s group.  Eventually, they moved their church home to Our Lady of Guadalupe, where he was a current member, and had been a member for 39 years.  At Our Lady of Guadalupe, he helped administer communion for many years.

Those left to cherish and honor his memory include his wife, Romelia; two sons, Ruben F. Champion, Jr. and his wife Naomi of Lubbock, Jerry Champion, and his wife Joann of Lubbock; one daughter, Alicia Champion Hernandez, and her husband David of Lubbock; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Gilbert Champion, and one sister, Dora Bueno.

A period of reflection and visitation for Ruben will be held from 3 PM to 8 PM on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway, with Recitation of the Rosary being recited at 6 PM.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1120 52nd Street, Lubbock, TX.  Father Martin Pina will be the Celebrant.  Final rites and interment will follow in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Pallbearers will be Josh Champion, Jerry Champion, Jr., Ruben James Champion, III, Jeremiah Champion, Justin Williams, Jordan Williams, Christian Diaz, and Alijah Hernandez.
