Sadie (Smith) Ludecke

Sadie (Smith) Ludecke, a long-time resident of Borden County, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 23, 2025, at the age of 95 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 15, 1930, in Borden County to the late Ned and Lucille (Healer) Smith.

Sadie married Bill Ludecke on October 2, 1970. Together they farmed for many years. Bill preceded her in death on July 13, 2012.

In earlier years, Sadie served as Deputy Sheriff for Borden County alongside Sheriff Sid Reeder. She loved her work and was a dedicated employee. A cowgirl at heart, she loved nothing better than a good ole barrel race. She was also employed by the USDA ASCS office in both Glasscock and Borden County for many years.

A member of the Miniaturists of Lubbock, Sadie was an extraordinary miniature quilt maker. Her tiny quilts were displayed at the International Quilt Show in Houston for several years, receiving much acclaim. The miniature braided rugs she made were also a favorite for many. She shared her quilt and rug making skills with many by conducting workshops in many places far and wide.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers (Rex, Jim and Rube) and one sister (Ruth), two nephews (Sammy and Richard) and one niece (Mary).

Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Delva Robb, Josie Taggert and Mike, Paula Woods and Mike, Monte Smith and Deidre, Bobbie George and Randy, and Lisa Ludecke. She also leaves behind many friends and loved ones.

Upon Sadie’s request, no services are to be held. Cremation arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
