Christopher "Chris" Herrera, a spirited soul known for his boundless energy, unwavering willingness to help others, passed away on April 16, 2026, in Quantico, Virginia. Born on May 10, 1997, in El Paso, Texas, Chris's life was a profound journey marked by dedication, service, and love.
A proud graduate of Plainview High School in 2015, Chris chose a path of honor and commitment by enlisting in the United States Marines shortly after his graduation. His military career was distinguished and far-reaching, taking him from Japan to South Carolina, through parts of Africa, and finally to a significant tenure of three years in Quantico, Virginia. Serving as a Staff Sergeant; Finance Technician in the Marine Corps Command Office, a Mentor to his Marines, and a Force Fitness Instructor, Chris demonstrated not only leadership but also a meticulous dedication to duty that earned him the respect of his peers and superiors alike.
Throughout his life, Chris carried with him a joyful and upbeat demeanor, his happiness and infectious smile to those around him unforgettable. He was the kind of person who found joy in the simple things such as landscaping, working out, hiking, taking runs with his two beloved dogs, a Great Dane and a Labrador, Zeus and Charlie, were constant companions who brought him immense comfort and joy.
Chris's story is woven with the steadfast support and love of his family, who remain a testament to his warm heart and generous spirit. He is survived by his beloved mother, Nohemi Herrera of Plainview, Texas; his sister Carol Rivas and her husband Aaron, also of Plainview; and his brothers Johnny Cortez of El Paso, Texas, and Adrian Cortez of Plainview, Texas. Each carries forward Chris’s legacy of kindness, resilience, and cheerfulness.
As we remember Christopher Herrera, we celebrate a life well-lived, a man whose kindness and vibrant spirit touched countless lives. Though he has left us too soon, the echoes of his laughter and his radiant energy will continue to inspire and comfort all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing, a light shining brightly in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched.
You can shed tears that he has gone, or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back or you can open your eyes and see all he's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can remember him and only that he has gone or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back or you can do what he'd want, smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
