Steve Esteban Garza, age 78, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 11, 2026. He was born on January 10, 1948, in Edinburg, Texas, to Margarita Alcala and Juan Lopez Garza.
Steve graduated from Lubbock High School in 1967. He was married to his beloved wife, Emma Davila Garza, for 48 years. Together they shared a life full of love, laughter, and cherished traditions, especially their Sunday Family Fun Days that created lasting memories for all who knew them.
Steve dedicated many years of service as a shipping and receiving clerk, working for Gould Pumps, Reese Air Force Base, and Del Rio Air Force Base. He later continued his career at McWhorter’s Truck Center as a Service Clerk until his retirement in 2013.
A devoted family man, Steve coached his son’s baseball team and served as an umpire for high school baseball and softball games, including Texas Tech baseball games. When he wasn’t coaching or officiating, he could be found in the stands cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. He was especially proud of and enthusiastic about supporting his grandson, Zach, in his drag racing endeavors.
Steve had a lifelong love of horse racing, a passion that began in his youth when he accompanied his uncle Emmancio, a jockey. He was captivated by the excitement and energy of the races. Another great passion of his was riding his Harley-Davidson, something he enjoyed for more than 20 years.
When Steve wasn’t supporting his family or enjoying the outdoors, he could often be found in his game room shooting pool or watching his favorite teams—the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Emma Davila Garza; his son, Peter Garza and wife Sylvia Garza; daughters, Elizabeth Garza-Garcia and husband Israel "Burt" Garcia, Kimberly Garza and husband Jose Barraza; brothers, David Garza, Gustavo Garza and Plutarco Garza III; sisters, Patricia Garza and Yolanda Garza-Schjoneman; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Juan Garza Jr.; and his sister, Linda Puebla.
