Sue Fletcher

Sue Fletcher, 87, of Lubbock, a well-known and respected commercial artist, passed away on Saturday morning, February 7, 2026. Sue was born on September 8, 1938, in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas, to the late Bethel Boyd Hardy and Dortheda (Keeton) Hardy. Sue attended Lubbock High School and graduated with her senior class in 1957. She then furthered her education by attending Texas Technological College, studying commercial art.

Sue worked as the Advertising Director for Hemphill Wells department stores, first in Lubbock, then in San Angelo, designing, overseeing and winning awards for their substantial advertising campaigns. She worked for Hemphill Wells for approximately twenty five years.

Following her days with Hemphill Wells, she sold advertising for a radio station in San Angelo and then went to work for Great Western Yellow Pages in the Houston area. She retired in 2008. Sue was also a well-respected freelance artist, completing numerous commissioned portraits and landscape works, in both pastels and acrylics.

Sue loved to paint, helped raise her three grandchildren, and was an avid reader, particularly interested in reading fiction. She enjoyed playing bridge, was an avid Democrat and a former member of Broadway Church of Christ.

Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her siblings: Chuck Hardy and wife Frances of Lubbock, Ann Mattingly of Lubbock and Brad Hardy of Burleson; three grandchildren: Lindsey Kemper and husband Kelby, Lyndon Butler and wife Kristi, and Mitchell Butler, as well as six great-grandchildren. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter and the light of her life, Natalie Beth Martin; and a sister, Sandra Witten.

No services are being planned currently. Cremation arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Those who wish to honor Sue may do so by donating in her memory to the Lubbock Arts Alliance, P. O. Box 5092, Lubbock, TX 79408 or to South Plains SPCA, 8901 US-87, Building 119, Lubbock, TX 79423.
