Sue Russwurm of Lubbock passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the age of 94. She was born August 15, 1930, in Custer City, Oklahoma to Earl and Eva Fourier. Most of her early years were spent in Enid, Oklahoma, where she grew up with her three sisters, Darla, Marilyn and Carol Jean. She was her dad’s “tom boy” and loved playing sports and was always outdoors. When she graduated from Enid High School, she was named Girl Athlete of the Year and the famous Don Haskins was named Boy Athlete of the Year. (She wanted to go see “Glory Road” when it was released and told us then, for the first time, that she knew Don Haskins). In 1951, she met Harold “Rusty” Russwurm, who was in the Air Force and was stationed at Vance AFB in Enid. Rusty attended church where Sue also attended and accepted an invitation from Earl and Eva to come home for Sunday lunch. That was the start of their long, loving relationship as they were married on December 7, 1951. It was also the start of their life together as they served others through the church.
Their union was blessed with three children, Rick Russwurm, Pam Pickett and Roger Lee Russwurm (who died as an infant and is entombed in Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock).
They moved to Lubbock in 1957 and choose Southside Church of Christ as their church home. It was a perfect fit and lifetime friendships were made: the Reeves, Mullican, Danley, Robinson, Bolton and Garrett families were partners in living happy lives and influencing and showing God’s love to others. Sue was the last surviving member of this “crew”. She and Rusty had a special way of making people comfortable and encouraging others. After moving their church home to Sunset, they continued their service with weekly visits to hospitals and people living by themselves and just checking on anyone who needed a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on. Sue would also often include a loaf of her banana bread. Her life was lived to follow the footsteps of Jesus and the example she set was an inspiration to everyone.
Sue was a great mom, grandma and great-grandma and she was always there to help. She was a stay-at-home mom for most of her life and was a master at providing for the daily needs of her family. She was involved in Rick and Pam’s school activities – home room mother, taxi service, driving cheerleaders to out of town games, following all of their sports and games, being their biggest supporter. This continued with her grandkids and great-grandkids. She loved watching them play and compete. Until recently, she still attended basketballs games for great grandkids in her wheelchair, which will not surprise anyone who knew her. She always remained a competitor.
Sue was a member of the Church of Christ since an early age when she was baptized. She was always serving others. Her family and church family meant the world to her. And it is truly a blessing for us who miss her so much that she is reunited with all of them now, especially our daddy and granddad. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rusty; son, Roger Lee; a great-grandson, Tate Hansen Pickett; and a sister, Darla Williams. She leaves behind her son, Rick and wife Debbie of Dumas; daughter, Pam and husband Keith of Hurst; grandchildren, Clayton Russwurm and wife Leslie of Ransom Canyon, Whitney Weesner and husband Drew of Hurst, Cole Russwurm of Lubbock, and Russ Pickett and wife Emmelie of Ft. Worth; and great-grandchildren, Cameron Russwurm, Avery Russwurm, Dean Russwurm, Finnton Weesner, Addyson Russwurm, Navy Pickett, Creston Weesner and Reid Pickett. She is also survived by two sisters, Marilyn Myers and Carol Jean Duncan and husband Bill and other loving friends and relatives.
