Thomas Scott Wright, 74, of Lubbock, TX passed away peacefully in his home on September 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer.
Thomas was born January 24, 1952, in Lordsburg, NM where he worked at his family bakery before meeting Gwen, the love of his life, in the summer of 1972. He married Gwen the very next summer in her hometown of Lubbock, TX. They moved from Morenci, AZ to various places before finally settling in Lubbock in 1979. Thomas worked as a miner and construction worker before ultimately pursuing his passion of becoming a nurse. He loved working with patients and was proud to let others know he was a nurse. Outside of work, he and his wife travelled the world, spent time with family and friends, and attended many Texas Tech sporting events. He always supported his grandchildren and loved his role as “Amps” for each of them. Thomas was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ. He attended many years at both Sunset Church of Christ and South Plains Church of Christ in Lubbock. He served as a deacon, a Bible class teacher, and a volunteer doing various things at both congregations. Lastly, he was also known to his neighborhood as a gardener who cared meticulously for his garden of flowers and vegetables.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gwen Whitaker Wright, their children, Tricia (and Rich) Grimstead of Lubbock, TX, and Amy (and Matt) Daley of Denver, CO, their 6 grandchildren: Gabby (and Jon) Lambert, Tanner Pylant, Daniel and Lily Grimstead, and Andrew and Levi Daley, 2 great-grandchildren: Jax and Jenna Lambert and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Arliss Wright, and his siblings, Leroy Jones and Lenora Wright.
A memorial service will be held at Sunset Church of Christ at 10 AM on September 12, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family would love for you to plant a garden or if you feel inclined send a donation to the Sunset International Bible Institution, he loved to help ministers and missionaries answer the call.
NOTICE TO FLORISTS: All flowers for this service are to be delivered directly to Sunset Church of Christ on Saturday morning, September 12, 2026, prior to the 10 AM Memorial Service. Please do not deliver floral arrangements to the funeral home.
