Tommy Joe Stone

Tommy Joe Stone, 76, went to be with the Lord on May 23, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Tommy leaves behind a legacy built on hard work, faith, laughter, and unwavering love for those around him.

Tommy Joe was born on July 13, 1949, in Tahoka, Texas to Thomas Anderson “T.A.” Stone and Margaret Lee (Porterfield) Stone. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1968 and later attended and graduated in 1971 with an Associate’s Degree from South Plains College, where he met the love of his life and bride of 54 years, Sheri Olivia (Demel) Stone. Tommy and Sheri were married on June 2, 1972, and together built a life full of family, memories, and plenty of stories worth retelling.

Tommy proudly worked for Lyntegar Electric Cooperative for 37 years as a Top General Lineman. He was known for his strong work ethic, steady hands, and willingness to help anyone who needed it.

He loved fishing and hunting with his brothers, sons, cousins, nephews, and lifelong friends. More often than not, the fish never quite made it home — they were usually cleaned, fried, and eaten before the trip was over. Tommy also loved farming and caring for cattle, pigs, and goats. Just not donkeys. And if Sheri brought home another batch of chickens, Tommy could usually be heard calling them “good coyote food” while hauling hay or feeding them anyway.

Nothing brought Tommy more joy than spending time with and supporting his family. Whether he was helping with Little League, sitting through livestock shows, or cheering from the stands at ballgames. He loved watching sports, especially the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs. If there wasn’t a game on, there was a good chance he was watching some sci-fi show, Bigfoot, or an old episode of Gunsmoke.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife, Sheri Stone; his sons, Joey Anderson Stone and wife Dawne (Holland) Stone, and Micah Demel Stone; and the grandchildren he treasured so much: Jayci Alizabeth Stone and fiancé Justin Chamberlain, J’Lynn Stone and boyfriend Chase Schwarte, John Stone, Katherine Stone, Natalie Ruth Stone, and their mom Suzanne Stone, Adam Bergin and wife Katelyn Bergin, Tyler Bergin and wife Tiffany Bergin, Travis Bergin and wife Shelby Bergin, and Christian Bergin and husband Josh Bergin. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Gabriel, Willem, and Erahlyn Bergin.

He is also survived by his brother Kent Stone; many beloved nephews and niece and great nephews and nieces including Drew Stone (Shelly), Davy Stone (Kassidy), D’Lynn Gill (Ryan), Kent Stone Jr. (Jill), Brent Stone (Jeri), and Ty Stone and their families. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Anderson “T.A.” Stone and Margaret Lee Stone; his dear brother Dan Lee Stone; sister-in-law Jeanie Stone; brothers-in-law Myles Demel and Curtis Gandy; and his father and mother-in-law, Max and Ruth Demel.

A viewing will be held from 11 am to 1:45 pm at Grace Church (Old Methodist Church) in Tahoka, Texas followed by funeral services at 2 pm on Thursday, May 28th. Burial will follow in the Nevels Memorial Cemetery under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Home. Chaplain Matthew Chavez, with Angels Care Hospice, will be the officiant.

Tommy Joe Stone will be remembered for his servant’s heart, his love for family, and the kind of presence that made people feel at home. He lived a full life, loved his people fiercely, and leaves behind stories and memories that will be told for generations.

In memory of Tommy and his love for baseball and time spent at ballgames, the family welcomes memorial donations to the Tahoka Little League in his name at P.O. Box 821, Tahoka, Texas or contact Alyssa Hawthorne at tahokalittleleague@yahoo.com.
