Lubbock

The life of Tony Thornton-Tippit unfolded with a remarkable grace and tenacity that resonated deeply within the hearts of those privileged to know him. Born on June 29, 1955, he passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at the age of 70 leaving behind an indelible mark through his unwavering spirit and charitable disposition.

Tony was a man of many dimensions – a beloved husband, a devoted brother, a cherished uncle, and a steadfast friend. He cultivated a flourishing career, notably serving as the CEO of Planned Parenthood, where his passionate advocacy for women's rights shone brightly. He was the past president of PFLAG where he advocated for human rights, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community, pouring his heart into creating a more inclusive and loving world for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families. He was more than a community leader; he was a force of compassion, a voice of justice, a champion for those who too often went unheard. His dedication to this vital cause was matched only by his charming flamboyance and innate ability to connect with others, for he truly never met a stranger. Later in life, he applied his meticulous attention to detail as a bookkeeper, balancing numbers much like he balanced the myriad aspects of his rich life.

Tony graduated from Monterey High School in 1973. His life was a celebration of storytelling and vivacious companionship, breathing joy into every encounter. Tony possessed an exceptional generosity of spirit; he would readily give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. His heart swelled with love for animals, particularly standard poodles and cats, who were lucky enough to receive his affection.

At the core of Tony's legacy is his marriage to his beloved husband, Tim Tippit. They shared 48 years together, eventually marrying on October 15, 2013 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Together, they built a life marked by mutual respect, unwavering support, and a shared zeal for enriching their community. Tony was also survived by his brother, Rodney Thornton and wife, Melinda, of Dallas, and several cherished nephews and nieces. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Betty (Hatchett) Thornton, and his two sisters, Gale Williams and Linda Reeves.
